After the epidemic of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) or mad cow disease, which unfortunately spread widely in Europe, a number of animals were slaughtered.
This, among many other things, generated a lot of cattle carcasses.
There was the challenge of efficiently disposing of said carcasses and the biomass period was pressing.
The Italian government launched a call for tenders to recycle the sludge from the treatment and destruction of the carcasses.
Solution:
“We proposed to build a small power plant fueled by animal sludge. We won the tender and successfully set up, built and made the power plant operational.”
It was a triple gain as it provided a solution to the huge amount of carcasses to dispose of. It produced electricity, economically efficient. It was located on the premises of a large third-party cement plant that was very energy-intensive, to which electricity was supplied, reducing public grid consumption.
